To be honest, I never clean my sand, been running for over 10 years with no issues. Put just enough sand to cover the bottom, the least amount possible. Invest in a couple of brittle stars. Sand siting stars will never survive in an aquarium and in my opinion shouldn't be collected and sold. Good luck!
