Those homes used wood lath coated with plaster. In the 1950's (here in MN anyway) there was a transition to gypsum board coated with plaster. Then in the 80's everything went to drywall taped and mudded (because of cost savings). Plaster over gypsum (today it is done over standard sheetrock) is by far the superior wall finish.
